English worldwide
English is used as a first language by an estimated 350 million people, and as a second language by over 400 million people (estimates vary widely). There are many varieties and styles of English in different parts of the world; see the separate entries for American English, Australian English, Black English, dialect, Estuary English, Standard English. The diversity of English is reflected in the titles of recent books on English worldwide, such as Tom McArthur, The English Languages (1998), Jennifer Jenkins, World Englishes: A Resource Book for Students (2003), and Braj Kachru et al, The Handbook of World Englishes (2006).
